how did you guys realize that you need to learn English and what steps did you make?

I didn't realize I needed it, I just had to use English: 1. to read specialized literature (there is much more programming related sources on the Internet, and they are usually more accurate). 2. to watch non-dubbed movies (you don't want to see other people's faces instead of the actors; why then do you listen to their voice? Besides, translation is *usually* awful and/or contains errors, not to speak of untranslatable word play).
It kind of progressed gradually; at one point I noticed that I can use english subtitles instead of russian ones; later I realized that often I don't need subtitles at all.
Nowadays I'm working at an international company, so it's a constant source of practice.

Pretty much this.

All that stuff really helps you to learn English. I would say if you can watch it w/o any subtitles you're at least at the medium level. I mean you can easily talk with other foreign people (except native English speakers), they will understand you and vice versa.

Of course if you want to go deeper this won't be enough.

Did anyone happen to participate at Standford university (coursera) online-lections? I used to register for crypto course once, but then I realised, that it's too boring for me. Right now I'm going for compilers course - I don't know why, but it seems to be really interesting. Too sad I don't have enought time, but "no problems have no solution"(c) - my english teacher.
